Chapter Seventeen

The next morning, he watched her as she stepped out on to the porch, long hair flowing around her shoulders as she took the steps to get the paper. He noticed one guard outside almost blending into the trees but not quite as he watched her.

She looked up as if sensing him and scanned the area, but he knew she couldn’t see him. He was tucked neatly against a bush wearing green to blend in. But she was looking right at him.

His breath stopped and held as he waited for her to say something to the guard, but she didn’t. She went back inside, and the guard began roaming around until the ring of his phone stopped him.

He couldn’t hear what he was saying, but as he turned and looked up at the house, he slipped from his hiding place and moved a little further down the street, glad no one else lived here.

The nearest neighbor was Spencer Devery and her girlfriend and then the casino and amusements of that area. The Greenwater witches lived behind Sarina, but they minded their own business.

He would kill her in two days and would love to kill her within Remi’s sight. However, he couldn’t count on her being back by then.

Heading to his car, he intended to send a message to the hacker. He wanted him to go back in for more money.

His phone vibrated alerting him of a notification as he neared his car. He pulled it from his pants pocket to check it out.

Skulking around like a thief in the light of day? I’m surprised. How is Mommy? Not for long.

Who are you?

I’m the bow, Remi was the arrow. I won’t miss my mark. I have three targets—and one is you. I’m watching you like you’re watching Sarina. I think I’ll put the guards on alert.

Kiss your plans goodbye.

He growled as he typed, I’m going to get you.

Tick tock.

When he got to the car, his phone rang, and he answered it hoping it was the stalker. “Ava?”

“What?”

“Fuck. It’s you.”

“Ava’s dead,” Diana’s brother, Rush told him.

“You’re lying.”

“No, I’m not,” he said. “We located her last night. She’s been dead a while. This isn’t her.”

Son of a bitch. Then this had to be Penn and Connor running some kind of game on him to scare him into giving up some money. Those sneaky little bastards.

He didn’t think they had enough of a brain between them to come up with this, but he guess he was wrong.

“I’m not helping with this kidnapping,” Rush snapped. “Maybe if you talk to the hacker you hired to take half the money back from me, he might do it.”

“I didn’t hire anyone else,” he muttered. “What are you talking about?”

“If you didn’t hire someone else, then you should be missing some money, too.”

“Wait. What? I’ll call you back.” He ended the call and opened his account to check things out. “Oh, fuck,” he whispered.

Remi hadn’t been able to track them, so who’d—the mysterious caller. He bet he had a good idea who that might be.
